He composed them, setting poems by Clemens Brentano, in 1918 for soprano and piano, and orchestrated one in 1933 and five in 1940. The piano version was first published by Adolph Fürstner in Berlin in 1919. Among the famous Lieder composers, Richard Strauss was demoted, or even suffered scorn, for setting so many sentimental poems. But this was in keeping with the composer’s personal taste and his love for various women, especially his wife, Pauline, who was a professional soprano and, his friends grumbled, a shrew.
